4. Medical and Special Needs
Medical Attention
Both pre-schools have a first aid kit for minor accidents and all staff members hold a current first aid certificate. All accidents are recorded in an accident book. In the unlikely event of a serious accident with a child we will immediately ring the parent / caregiver to get permission to take them to the medical centre in Redcliffs or by ambulance to hospital.
If children require medication during pre-school hours, parents are required to sign an authorisation form to enable staff to administer this.
The Ministry of Education supports children’s health by asking teachers to sight immunisation records. Please attach a copy of these to your child’s enrolment form. Please inform Tonia if you choose not to immunise your child. She will explain the procedures in place for ensuring the safety of non-immunised children.
Hearing and vision checks are carried out regularly by the Ministry of Health. A health professional visits regularly during your child’s time at preschool.
Illness
Please notify our staff if your child is unwell and unable to attend the preschool. Your child should be kept home if you suspect illness, especially of an infectious nature. In the event that your child becomes ill while at preschool we would require a parent / caregiver to collect them immediately.
Please see our sickness policy on the notice board for details of when it is necessary to keep your child at home.
Special Needs
The needs of the individual child are of paramount importance. Therefore, our programme is flexible enough to offer a positive learning environment and meet the individual needs of all children in our care. Children with special needs will not be excluded from any area of our programme unless this is their parents wish.
If we do not have the equipment necessary to enhance a particular child’s development, we will seek advice to ensure we acquire the appropriate resources.
If we do not have the expertise required to enhance a particular child’s development, the matter will be discussed with parents and management and left to the supervisor’s discretion to recommend a more specialist service better able to read and meet the needs of the particular child.
